Money: A Tool or a Master?

In Matthew 6, Jesus warns us about serving two masters: God and mammon. This cautionary message highlights money's subtle yet significant threat to our faith. While money is essential for our daily lives and ministry, it can quickly become an idol. Let's explore the biblical perspective on money and its role.

Jesus' ministry demonstrates the importance of money as a resource. It helped Him pay taxes (Matthew 17:24-27) and facilitated His burial (Matthew 27:57-60). Similarly, money supports various ministries and campus fellowships today, enabling them to organize programs and build projects. Apostle Paul's contentment in abundance or lack (Philippians 4:12-13) exemplifies a healthy attitude toward money.

However, when money becomes our master, it distracts us from God. Scripture warns against the deceitfulness of riches (Matthew 13:22, 1 Timothy 6:10) and the love of money, which can lead to spiritual erosion. The rich often pursue more wealth, fueled by a false sense of fulfillment.

- 1 Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is the root of all evil..."

- Matthew 13:22: "The care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word..."

- Luke 16:13: "No servant can serve two masters... Ye cannot serve God and mammon."

As believers, we must recognize money's potential to divert our hearts from God. Let's:

1. View money as a tool, not a master.

2. Trust God for provision and guidance.

3. Avoid prioritizing wealth above our faith.

4. Cultivate contentment, regardless of circumstances.

1. How do you view money in your life?

2. Are you using money as a tool or serving it as a master?

3. What steps can you take to maintain a healthy attitude toward money?

Heavenly Father, help us keep money in its rightful place. May we trust in You, not uncertain riches, and use money as a tool to further Your kingdom.
