DEALING WITH ANXIETY (III): THE POWER OF PRAYER

“Give us this day our daily bread” Matthew 6 verse 11

I was working on a job and had no idea how to resolve an issue. As the date of my presentation drew near, I was losing control and becoming extremely anxious. I clamped all activities including prayers to resolve this. Yet, nothing worked and anxiety turned to depression. I remember giving up one night; repenting for putting confidence in myself; had fellowship with God and slept. That night, I received a simple solution. “Oh! What peace we often forfeit, Oh what needless pain we bear . . . all because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer!”

Martin Luther said, “I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.” Today, we say: “I have so much to do that I have no time to pray.” Prayer is a means of receiving great grace from the Lord, yet the one thing that the devil keeps most of us away from doing (Philippians 4:5-6). Jesus repeatedly assured His disciples that whatever they asked in His name will be granted (John 14:13-14, 15:16, 16:23-26).

Today’s text highlights how God expects us to pray, and the content of prayer. Notice that the first half of this prayer reflects a desire for God’s glory. This must be the passion of our daily prayers. All other prayers must serve to meet this ultimate passion. (James 1:5-8, 4:3-4)
